This week’s new music post features a surname that will be familiar to many but I’m not talking about the lead singer of You Me At Six, I’m talking about his sister, the also very musically talented Elissa.

Hailing from Surrey, this girl has spent the past few years recording and gigging all around the country and impressing plenty of people with her huge vocal ability along the way. Capturing the attention of press, radio stations and other musicians alike has seen her gain radio play, a good reputation in the industry and a place performing at the Olympics as the first act to be hand-picked as an Emerging Icon in the search for the UK’s best unsigned talent.

Famed for writing her own wonderful songs has seen her gain plenty of radio airplay and that saw the above single ‘Salt’ voted track of the week on Edith Bowman’s Review Show on Radio 1 back in March last year beating off the likes of Beyonce and Justin Beiber for the crown that week.

It’s clear to see just exactly why she beat them as well with a gentle start that really shows off the harmonious quality of her voice and the wonderful tone she has to portray the stories in her lyrics. The backing music of drums, piano and guitar is quite basic and quiet but with a wonderful melody that fully compliments her voice. It may be a duet with her brother Josh but her voice is the one that shines the most in my opinion, I love Josh’s voice but the way she switches from soft to high pitched, quiet to almost powerhouse is brilliant to listen to.

Last year saw the release of her 4th EP, ‘Devoid of Rue’ it features 5 tracks all of which are an impressive listen and showcase her musical skill. The EP was released in June and was produced by Matt O’Grady, it was funded through Pledge Music freeing Elissa of having to bow to labels and their demands. Fans who had pledged money received live updates and exclusives such as a deluxe version of the album featuring acoustic versions of the songs.

The success of not just her latest release but her previous 3 EP’s has seen her play a multitude of venues such as Brixton Academy and Wembley Arena and being named as a headline act at last year’s Underground Festival. She’s also supported the likes of You Me At Six and Paramore, she spent pretty much all of 2012 gigging with her live band and she’s spent time writing songs for other artists, a clear sign of how good a songwriter she is if she is being asked to write for big pop acts.

After the growth in sound and experience over the past couple of years as well as the growth in listeners and becoming a more recognised name in the music world, it seems 2014 should be a big year for the singer/songwriter. If you’ve not already heard her sound which ranges from acoustic ballads and piano led tracks to country infused songs and rockier influences, then you should definitely check it her stuff out now. There is no doubt that she is an act you will be hearing a lot about over the next few months.
